The Dargilan cave, the largest cave in the Causses and Cévennes.
Situated in the south of the Lozère region, overlooking the Jonte Gorges, the Dargilan cave is as astonishing for its impressive size as for the incredible variety of its concretions.
Nicknamed the Pink Cave because of its highly accentuated natural hues, Dargilan was discovered in 1888 by Edouard Alfred Martel, the father of French speleology.
He wrote of Dargilan: “Go and see Dargilan even if you know the prettiest caves in Europe”.
First opened in 1890, it was the first cave open to visitors.
Today, the safe and well-maintained trail is 1 km long. You can discover the cave, room by room, and marvel at the great vault with its fistulas, the unique petrified waterfall, the crystalline lakes, the majestic bell tower…
The Dargilan cave has been fitted with new dynamic LED lighting, which highlights the site, its volumes and its details, while protecting it at the same time.
The guided tour lasts around 1? hours. The cave is accessible to as many people as possible, as it is not very steep. The tour is suitable for all the family.
On site, you can enjoy a drink or a snack on the terrace, which offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Jonte gorges.
Don’t miss the Abime de Bramabiau with its underground river and the Aven Armand, both less than 30 minutes from Dargilan.
Make the most of your break to discover more of the CAUSSES & CÉVENNES region, a veritable jewel case of nature, whose landscapes are listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
