Grotte de Trabuc “l’aquatique”: A treasure trove of caves!

Situated between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, beneath the Cévenol relief of the National Park, the Grotte de Trabuc is a major cave in the destination.

Known since ancient times, as evidenced by the prehistoric bones found on site, it was also used in the 17th century during the Cévennes War (Reformation) as a refuge by the Camisards. Its name dates back to the 19th century, when the “Trabucaires”, bandits equipped with a “Trabuc” (pistol with a wide mouthpiece) took refuge in the cave.

At Trabuc, water is very present and tirelessly leaves its mark on the stone. It trickles down from draperies to waterfalls, all the way to the sumptuous Lac de Minuit.

This mineral setting is also marked by another special feature: the army of 100,000 soldiers!

This is a collection of thousands of tiny concretions, strangely shaped like stalagmites. Even today, they still raise many questions among scientists. Indeed, the mystery of their formation is still total.
